Breaking News from the JoC: CMA CGM to Deploy six 18,000 TEU Ships from Asia to West Coast US     Uh oh.  As just announced by CMA CGM, in May new service via 18,000 TEU vessels will be inaugurated across the Pacific to the US West Coast.  We’ve talked about this for a long time, now let’s see if it actually can work smoothly – at the port and the interface with the ground transport system.  Many have expressed doubts about the US logistics system’s ability to handle these large vessels and the glut of cargo that they discharge at one time.  US ports weren’t designed for this, but then again there aren’t many examples of purpose-built infrastructure that had these vessels in mind from the start.   Much more to come on this one as relates to logistics system efficiencies, etc., but we’ll also be focusing on winners and losers, and the impact on key supply chains.
